Having established itself as a film industry hub through the Pusan International Film Festival, the city of Busan (also spelled Pusan) is seeking to strengthen its reputation further through the upcoming Busan Contents Market. The event kicks off for a three-day run at BEXCO on May 12. Launched by the city in 2005, the BCM has now become Asia’s largest media contents market, showing the latest global trends in broadcasting and new media.

Some 500 companies from over 40 countries will participate in this year’s event including Endemol of the Netherlands, NHK Enterprises and TV Asahi of Japan and MoonScoop of France.

Most of them deal with current events and issues related to Asia in fields ranging from people to nature to society and culture in the region. The organizing committee has introduced a new award program to uncover and support promising documentary producers.

Meanwhile, Korean documentaries are drawing attention, with recent works such as “Asian Corridor in Heaven” and “Tears in the Arctic” gaining popularity in Europe, according to the head of the committee.
