Mee Fung LEE, the Managing Director of PIK Film speaks about the potential of European Doc content in Asia and the new ways to distribute them on new media networks.

When did you launched Pik Films ? What is the target of this company ?

pikfilmlogoPIK film was set up in 1996, based in Kuala Lumpur. Our focus is in documentary and factual content from Europe for Asia Pacific broadcasters especially Mainland China, Taiwan, Hong Kong, Korea and South East Asia.  In the last 5 years, we expanded our distribution to include new media as well.

With a broad network spanning over 15 years in the region, the company consults its Principals in co-productions, promotions, program localization and licensing of its content and channels across all media platforms. We value long term relationships and work well in creating successful deals and projects for both Principals and Buyers.

With which European producers and distributors do you have strong relations ? How many european documentaries have you already distributed in Asia ?

We represent all media distribution for content from Deutsche Welle (Germany), ORF (Austria), United Docs (Germany), Studio Hamburg (Germany) and KM Plus Media (Czech Republic). We have already distributed thousands of hours across Asia.

What kind of documentaries from Europe are you looking for distribution in Asia ?

Wildlife/Natural History, Science, Environment/green programs, History, Architecture, Design and Lifestyle are the most popular genres we distribute and which are appreciated by our customers in Asia.

What are the Asian countries which are more interested by showing European Documentaries ? What are your major customers in Asia (Asian broadcasters) ?

Korea, Thailand and Vietnam are our more primary customers. Our major broadcasting clients are pan asian networks and local Cable and Satellite Pay TV companies.

Are you selling content to mainland China, despite censorship issue ?

Yes, we have sold many titles to Mainland China across all media.  Documentary censorship is handled by the media itself, not PIK film

What have been your best selling European Docs this latest 2 years ?

. Wildlife/Natural History productions from ORF Universum (Austria) brand is one of our best selling catalogue given its high end production value. (One of our best selling tittle was “THE GREAT RIFT”, a 3-part special, Co-production of ORF, Cosmos Factory, Studio Hamburg/NDR Naturfilm, WDR, ARTE, National Geographic Channel).
. Architecture series from Deutsche Welle such as euromaxx architecture and The Art of Space are also popular titles.

How do you see the pontential of new media distribution in Asia ?

Big. We are starting to do new media deals and the business model varies depending on territories.

Would you like to develop your cooperation with European partners ? what kind of other cooperation could you imagine ?

Yes, we constantly extend our services to the brands we represent in the areas of securing co-production partners, funding and also marketing/promotion activities.

Are u involved in coproduction with European producers or distributors ?

We havent co-produced yet but we have repackaged euromaxx (Deutsche Welle) into Mandarin language with a Singapore broadcaster who airs the programme on their pan-asian platform.
